NEWPORT, N.C. -- Johnnie Lee "J.J" Johnson, 48, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Craven Regional Hospital in New Bern, N.C.

 Mr. Johnson graduated from Soddy-Daisy High School in 1970, retired from the U. S. Marine Corps May 1991, was a life member of VFW Post 8986 in Newport, owned and operated By-Pass Auto and Wrecker Service from 1991-1996. He was manager of Western Auto in Morehead City and Havelock, N.C.

  He is survived by his wife, Lila Kaye Garner Johnson; a daughter, Amanda Lynn Johnson of the home; a son, David A. Johnson, Coupeville, Wash.; his mother, Linnie Mae Johnson, Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.; his father, Howard Johnson, Chattanooga; three sisters and their husbands, Cathy and Ronnie Hawkins, Soddy-Daisy, Vivian and Roy Gamble, Freeport, Fla., and Mary and Howard Tucker, Soddy-Daisy; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Ginger Johnson, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; his mother-in-law, Ann Rivers Garner and a brother-in-law, Joe Garner, Atlantic Beach. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Kaila Johnson and Alex Johnson and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
